Grey's Anatomy

The season eight finale of Grey’s Anatomy will air on May 17 on ABC. With many sneak peeks, spoilers and hints circling around the web, the destiny of some of the main characters is left quite unstable. Critics are asking: “Whose turn is it to die?”

The show has been criticized for being overly dramatic for years, especially after the heartbreaking death of the lovely Dr George O’Malley (portrayed by T.R. Knight) in season five.

Since the show’s start in 2005 the series protagonist Meredith Grey-Shepherd has come a long way. She’s married to Dr Derek Shepherd (or Dr McDreamy if you like) with whom she’s raising a daughter together, and after completing the dreaded board exam, she’s about become an attending surgeon.

The past season finales for Grey’s have been indeed touching, so the much-anticipated ending for season eight won’t be expected to be any less tragic than the previous seasons. Meredith’s fiasco with the clinical trial at the end of season 7 caused a lot of tension between her, Derek and Chief Webber (James Pickens). Fans surely remember a merciless massacre by a frenzied relative of a former patient between the walls of Seattle Grace Hospital in season 6 that caused the deaths of Dr Percy (Robert Paker) and Dr Reed Adamson (Nora Zehetner). Not to mention the nerve-wrecking near death experience of Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and the death of George. It seems like the sad farewell of a beloved character at the end of the season is becoming a tradition. Has Shonda Rhimes, the creator and producer of the show, gone way over the top with the drama?

Let’s explore who’s turn it might be to leave the show according to the speculating fans of Grey’s Anatomy.

Meredith Grey-Shepherd

Meredith was facing severe health issues while taking the board exam and her becoming a “real doctor” is under a huge question mark. Series’ producers have caused a lot of speculating due to Rhimes’s recent tweet, quoting Kurt Vonnegut: “Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them - in order that the reader may see what they are made of.” Interesting… Although highly doubtful that the writers would let Meredith die. That would be wrong on so many levels for so many reasons. Let’s hope for the best!

- Derek Shepherd

Rumour has it Patrick Dempsey hasn’t renewed his contract for the 9th season… yet? Breaking up Meredith and Derek through death would perhaps be for the best, as the couple has been through so much together, that any other way would be… well, tacky. Killing Derek would also raise the question - hasn’t Meredith been through enough already? Again, doubtful loss of a character but surely a one to keep in mind.

Alex Karev (Justin Chambers)

The death of Alex, one of the show’s originals would be beyond shocking forGrey’s  regular viewers. Alex’s plot this season hasn’t been too eventful, so is it possible he is being “saved” or the finale? It has been spilled that Alex “will discover how much he has grown this season.” Killing him would be a veryGrey’s-like ironic and sad twist.

Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson)

Probably the most loved character of the show. HIGHLY unlikely but you never know. Rhimes said that Bailey’s relationship with Ben will be taken to another level. Engagement? Marriage? Pregnancy? Well we shall see.

- Mark Sloan (Eric Dane)

Fans think he should be safe… But is he? Well, Dane’s contract has been renewed for next season so we will see McSteamy in season nine. Yay!

Who fans see go?

April Kepner (Sarah Drew)

Dr Kepner has been named as the most annoying character of the show since her appearance in season six. Overachieving “the perfect one” hasn’t had much of a solid ground under her feet this season as she didn’t really succeed as a chief resident. She recently hooked up with a fellow colleague Dr Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), to whom she lost her virginity to. Kepner also failed the board exam. Fans say her time is up...
