'Lewis' will end after the next series.

The ITV1 detective drama - which stars Laurence Fox and Kevin Whatley - will come to a conclusion at the end of its seventh series as the actors don't feel they could take it anywhere else.

Laurence told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Kev and I have decided we want to do other things, otherwise it all gets a bit samey. I mean we could have gone on forever, but ... Oh God, was I supposed to say that? I have no idea if I'm allowed to tell you it's ending. Bloody hell, what if I wasn't?"

The show - which is a spin-off of 'Inspector Morse' - recently ended its sixth series and production on a seventh will happen later this month after ITV gave the go-ahead.

An ITV spokesperson said in May said: "We have a series of 'Lewis' due on screen later this month and a further series goes into production in June. We remain committed to 'Lewis'."

'Morse' author Colin Dexter, who acts as a consultant on the show, questioned its future in January by claiming that Kevin's character Detective Inspector Robbie Lewis cannot "go on much longer".
