Coronation Street's Maria Connor is to get pregnant by her gay best friend.
The former hairdresser shares a night of passion with Marcus Dent after the pair have spent months trying to contain their feelings for each other, and she is stunned when she learns she is expecting his child.
A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Both Marcus and Maria have struggled with their emotions for months. But deep down there are fires burning inside the two of them - and finally they end up in bed together.
"The shock of the year will be when Maria finds out she's pregnant."
Viewers of the ITV1 soap have seen midwife Marcus (Charlie Condou) struggle with his sexuality in the past few weeks and grow closer and closer to Maria (Samia Ghadie).
Samia recently revealed how she wishes she could give her alter-ego - who already has a young son, Liam, with her late husband Liam - some love advice.
She said: "The fact that Maria may have developed feelings for Marcus shocked me when I first read the scripts. She should know better than that - she's been with enough blokes and had enough failed relationships to know when to steer clear!
"If I was Maria's mate, I'd take her to one side and quite light-heartedly say, 'Just be careful what you're doing.' He's an openly gay man, so there's not much future in it. There would always be something missing between them."
