Providing an intimate view into one woman’s struggle with obesity, viewers are invited inside the incredible life of Ruby Gettinger, a 500 pound young woman living in Georgia.
Having hit a peak of 715 pounds back in 1995, Ruby’s weight has fluctuated at a dangerous level ever since, but events take a drastic turn when Ruby’s doctor issues her with a terrifying ultimatum lose weight or lose your life.
In the first episode of this inspirational series we meet 500 pound Ruby Gettinger as she embarks on a journey to lose weight and save her life.
Since the age of 8 all Ruby has known is a life where she is overweight. After myriad attempts to lose the weight, she decides that this is her last chance to overcome her demons.
Ruby offers up a unique insight into the daily struggles of the obese. Revealing a wardrobe full of unworn dresses, a bed propped up by bricks and an oversized arm chair she speaks of the challenges she faces on a daily basis. She also explains about her modest dreams for a life when she is skinny including having a simple bubble bath.
We’re also introduced to Ruby’s tight knit support network. Best friends Georgia and Jeff who are desperate to see her lose the weight and nephew Jim who regularly helps Ruby with everyday tasks.
Flying in from L.A, Ruby’s fitness freak friend Brittany comes to visit, offering up a team talk to help Ruby kick start her weight loss programme. But can Ruby shun Georgia’s delicious home cooking?
The first steps of Ruby’s journey mean that she must assemble a team of experts in different fields to show her the right path to weight loss. After Ruby’s family physician tells her its do or die, she consults obesity specialist Dr Bradley.
What will he make of Ruby’s condition? Ex-Navy serviceman Rees Brown is also enlisted to the team, as Ruby’s personal trainer alongside a nutritionist who provides her with tailor made meals.
But Ruby is apprehensive about getting one final member of the team on board, psychiatrist Dr Tim Brewerton. Will Ruby be able to brave the session and delve deep into the mental side of her addiction?
Ruby must face up to the epic journey ahead of her as the significance of her need to lose weight begins to hit her hard. Can Ruby finally overcome her life long hurdle and realise her dream of being skinny?
