Sue Johnston has joined the cast of 'Coronation Street'.
Producer Phil Collinson has confirmed the 'Waking the Dead' actress will begin filming for the ITV1 soap at the end of the month, and will make her on-screen debut as Gloria, the mother of Rovers Return landlady Stella Price (Michelle Collins), in June.
Gloria will arrive on the cobbles unannounced from Spain, where she has been running a bar, and despite telling Stella she only plans on staying in Weatherfield for a short time, the outspoken matriarch will quickly fall out with her daughter when it becomes apparent she has no intention of leaving.
Meanwhile, the men of 'Coronation Street' had better watch out as man-eating Gloria has her sights set on dashing former escort Lewis Archer - played by Nigel Havers - and Rita Sullivan's fiance Dennis Tanner (Philip Lowrie).
Phil Collinson said: "I'm delighted to be welcoming Sue Johnston to the cast of 'Coronation Street'. She is a national treasure and a stunning actress.
"She has been at the heart of the very best comedy and drama the UK has produced over the last 30 years and will step into the heart of 'Coronation Street' as her character, Gloria, takes up running The Rovers with daughter Stella."
Meanwhile, former 'Hollyoaks' actor Jamie Lomas - the fiance of 'Corrie' star Kym Marsh (Michelle Connor) - could be set to join the ITV1 soap as the womanising brother of Carla Connor (Alison King).
An insider told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: "We have some exciting storylines for Carla's brother. He's set to be a brilliant character.
"We think Jamie would be perfect as a bad-boy womaniser, so we're keen for him to take the part. You never know, he could end up making a play for Kym's character."
