Ugly Betty star America Ferrera is still coming to terms with the fact her love life has become tabloid material after taking calls from angry family members after they heard she'd become engaged.The actress was stunned when reports circulated earlier this year (07) that her longtime boyfriend Ryan Piers Williams had proposed and then spent days reassuring her family and friends the rumours weren't true.She tells America's W magazine, "His mom called me and my sisters were calling me, and I was like, 'Are you kidding? Did you not think I would tell you first?' "Then I put out a statement that it wasn't true, and that became a whole news story. So now it's news when something doesn't happen?More on America Ferrera as she reveals she struggled to fit in when she was growing up in Los Angeles' Valley community because white friends thought she was too dark and Latinos poked fun at her for being too pale.The actress admits she was blissfully unaware of the colour divide until she was left heartbroken when a school crush told her he preferred white girls.Speaking to W magazine, she recalls, "I had the hugest crush on a boy, and my best friend had a crush on him too."One day he said to me, 'I like your best friend more because she's paler and she has freckles.' And it was right then that I began to feel like, 'Oh wow, I'm different.'" But when Ferrera tried to befriend her fellow Latinos, she felt just as isolated: "I grew up in the Valley.
