Sherlock co-writer Mark Gatiss has confirmed that the television series is “set in the past now”, after he and the fellow bosses working on the show sat down to figure out the timeline of events.

The time change happened during the third season’s finale, which was set in 2014. Because the next episode in the series ‘The Abominable Bride’ took place immediately afterwards, and the show’s return on January 1 will see it take place after the events of that episode again, it means that Sherlock is now two years in the past.

Gatiss admits: “We’ve avoided all calendars or anything like that, because it’s now getting so confusing.”

Steven Moffat also promised that the new episodes will be real tear-jerkers.

Speaking at the Emmy Awards earlier this year, he said he had a “devastating” plan and explained: “We practically reduced our cast to tears by telling them the plan.

“Mark [Gatiss] and myself are so excited with what we’ve got coming up, probably more excited than we’ve ever been about Sherlock… Honestly, I think we can [top season 3].”

Sherlock returns to BBC One on New Year’s Day, January 1.
