Stars of the ITV drama, David Tennant and Olivia Colman, were issued password protected scripts, encrypted documents and given false names when they received the story that was even branded with a digital watermark so that it could be traced if it was forwarded to a third party.

Sources say writer Chris Chibnall insisted on "complete radio silence" and told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Chris wants 'Broadchurch' to finish with a band, which is why he stepped up security. If anyone had let any plot details slip, it would be easy to find out where the leak came from. But the cast have maintained complete radio silence."

David and Olivia will reprise their roles as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy and Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller respectively following the conclusion of the second installment of the gritty series in February 2015.

This time they will be investigating a sexual assault following the murder of Danny Latimer [Oskar McNamara].

Chris said previously: "We've been overwhelmed that nine million people every week have continued to join us on the twists and turns of 'Broadchurch'. This third chapter has been a glint in my eye for a long time and I'm thrilled to be writing these characters once again."

Following Joe Miller's (Matthew Gravelle) arrest for the murder of Latimer at the end of the first series, the character was found not guilty after his trial in the series two finale and viewers will now find out whether he follows his wife Ellie's advice to leave the Dorset town and never come back.

Little else is known, except Arthur Darvill is to return as Reverend Paul Coates and former 'Coronation Street' star Julie Hesmondhalgh - who portrayed Hayley Cropper in the ITV soap opera between 1998 and 2014 - has been cast as Trish Winterman.
