The 'Coronation Street' actress has been troubled by "quite a few" stalkers over her career and is facing the matter again following her return to the ITV soap, but admits it is particularly frightening when they know where she lives.

Speaking on 'Loose Women' today (03.03.16), the 53-year-old star said: "There is a great upside because it is regular work and all the rest of it. It is fantastic scripts. It is really nice. I am really grateful for all your letters and all the rest of it. Everybody's been so nice, saying Erica is great and they love her, so that is brilliant. But there is that down side. Stalkers. Again, which I used to have a few years ago.

"I have got one at the moment, which has been going on for a few months. I have had quite a few when I was in 'Emmerdale' and 'Bad Girls'. Well I have had them all my life."

When she was asked what action had been taken against her stalkers, Claire - who plays Erica Holroyd in 'Corrie' - revealed the police are unable to "do anything".

She said: "Because they haven't committed a crime yet so police can't do anything.

"It's terrifying when they know where you live as well.

"But there's nothing I can do, because they haven't committed any offence. I've been here before, so I know how it works but you never know how their mindset is.

"It is a different person so it could be completely different."

The 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant explained that the stalking starts through fan mail, which she sometimes responds to.

She said: "It starts as fan mail, that is how most of them start. Yes, you send your usual little picture back. It's not actually sinister, they're just kind of sending things and obsessing."
