The long-running soap's boss Kate Oates has admitted she's got some exciting plans coming up for the beautiful barmaid - portrayed by Kym Marsh - over the next few months because she wants to give her a break from the misery she's endured recently.

Kate told Soaplife magazine: "I rather like Michelle with Robert. He hasn't put a foot wrong - and he's done the right thing by Michelle and not made a move on her."

However, she has admitted it won't be plain sailing for the brunette beauty and the restaurant owner (Tristan Gemmill) as he is really strong minded and won't be pushed around unlike her cheating estranged husband Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson).

She explained: "In fact, he's almost apologetic for having feelings for her. I find that kind of unselfishness refreshing in soap. It won't all be hearts and flowers for this pair.

"Robert's an alpha male and tougher than Steve. Michelle shouldn't expect that his very deep feelings for her will mean she can push him around."

Michelle saw her world crumble before her eyes earlier this year when she was forced to deliver her dead baby and then found out this month that her husband Steve had fathered her friend Leanne Battersby's (Jane Danson) healthy newborn son.

The heartbroken pub worker will be seen fleeing the cobbles soon as she attempts to gather her thoughts by spending time with her best friend Carla Connor for a while.

But it's thought she could be in for a surprise when she returns as Robert is expected to reveal his true feelings for her following her short absence.
