Described as "a steadfast and honourable British subject", the character is "torn between a finely-honed sense of familial duty and a strong moral compass of right and wrong." He's also "boyishly handsome with an upper class rearing" and is said to be "the consummate gentleman".

However, not all is great with the Lord, as a scandal from his past means he's been relegated to an undesirable position as governor of a desolate prison in Northern Scotland.

Adapted from Diana Gabaldon's international best-selling books by Ronald D. Moore, Outlander will continue to follow the series and in the third season will be based on the third book from the eight book series.

Picking right up after Claire travels to return to her life in 1948, viewers will see her pregnant and struggling to cope with the reappearance of her first husband, Frank.

Back in the 18th century, Jamie is suffering from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the battle of Culloden, along with the loss of Claire. Years will pass, but exactly how will the two cope with building a life away from one another?

Will they fine one another again, and if so, will they be the same people they were back when they were last together?

Outlander seasons 1 and 2 are available now to watch on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
