The 45-year-old actor, who has played the role of Detective Inspector Alec Hardy since the series started in 2013, will be "sad" to see the show come to an end after its fourth year, which will air later this month, as he has found it a "friendly, comfortable place" to work in.

Speaking about the last-ever series to Radio Times magazine, he said: "What will be sad is that we'll never go back to it.

"It's always been there as a sort of friendly, comfortable place that we'll return to. But now that doesn't exist anymore, it does feel like a loss."

But the Scottish star has admitted filming the scenes alongside his co-star Olivia Coleman, who has been cast as Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller throughout the crime drama, made him feel the "happiest" he has ever felt on set.

He explained: "['Broadchurch'] is one of the happiest sets I've ever been on ... It's ludicrous for us to talk about how hard it is or how difficult our life is pretending to be police officers investigating a pretend sexual assault." "You don't take it any less seriously, but I can go home at the end of the day and not be someone who's living that."

And the 43-year-old actress would "die happy" if she was to work alongside the 'Doctor Who' star again.

She said: "If I could do every job with David Tennant I would die happy. He's the nicest, most fun person to work with. He never complains. He's brilliant."

And David has reciprocated the compliment and has credited the brunette beauty as his friend.

He said: "Olivia has definitely become a part of my life and it's lovely ... and, you know, our families know each other. She's a mate."
