The 'Little Britain' star is to be the new face of the classic ITV game show and said he has "some very big shoes to fill" sharing a picture of the late Sir Terry Wogan - who hosted the programme from 1979 to 1983 - on his Twitter account.

Alongside the photo posted on Tuesday morning (23.08.16), David, 45, wrote: "I have some very big shoes to fill as the new host of a special Christmas episode of #BlanketyBlank for @ITV (sic)"

Meanwhile, a source has said they are hoping that the 'Britain's Got Talent' judge's "playful humour" will help the show's bosses "replicate" the success of the cult programme, which was last on screens in August 2002.

A TV insider told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Blankety Blank was such a huge hit in the 80s and ITV bosses want to replicate that success. They think David Walliams is a perfect fit for the show with his camp and playful humour.

"The Christmas show will be a trial but if it proves a hit there is sure to be a series in 2017."

In more recent times the show was hosted by Paul O'Grady from 1997 to 2002 and regularly saw his alter ego, Lilly Savage, on the show and Les Dawson was the host until 1990.

David has some experience of 'Blankety Blank' having appeared on a Comic Relief charity edition in 2011.
