Further guest spots have been revealed with Patti LuPone being bumped to a series regular as a brand new character - Dr. Seward - a therapist whose treatment plan isn't the most regular or celebrated. Wes Studi will take on Native American Kaetenay who has a strong bond to Ethan (Josh Hartnett), with Jessica Barden becoming a follower for Lily (Billie Piper) and Dorian Gray's (Reeve Carney) cult. Samuel Barnett also joins as Seward's secretary, and Vanessa finds a new friend in a zoologist, played by Christian Camargo.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, show creator John Logan talked about the cast expansion: "Season three is a real change of pace for us, which is good. We can get out of the alleys and cobblestone bars of Victorian London and see a bit more of the world. Essentially there's a pull bringing these characters together, and it's supernatural, partly romantic, partly shared destiny."

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime and Sky Atlantic with a nine episode third season in 2016.
