Channel 4 is to air a new adaptation of Fargo.

The US TV drama is based on Joel and Ethan Coen's 1996 movie of the same name and is due to begin airing in the US on FX in April, with the UK broadcast to follow shortly after.

The series stars British actor Martin Freeman as small town insurance salesman Lester Nygaard, whose life changes when the manipulative Lorne Malvo, played by Billy Bob Thornton, arrives in town.

Other actors include Colin Hanks as police deputy Gus Grimly, 'Breaking Bad' star Bob Odenkirk, Oliver Platt, Kate Walsh and Molly Solverson.

Channel 4's chief creative officer Jay Hunt said: "'Fargo' is a perfect Channel 4 show - a dark comedy, beautifully directed with a stunning cast. We are excited to be bringing it to a British audience."

Chris Ottinger of production company MGM added: "We are so happy to have Channel 4 as our broadcast partner in the UK and are thrilled to have been part of the team that brought 'Fargo' to life. We look forward to introducing it to audiences worldwide."

The TV adaptation will exist in the same timeline as the 1996 original movie - which starred Frances McDormand and William H. Macy - and is expected to have the same sense of dark humour as the film.

'Fargo' was nominated for seven Academy Awards and earned Frances an Oscar for Best Actress.
