With a notorious gallery of villains in Bruce Wayne's Gotham, the second season of the show will focus on the transformation of those with a particularly evil agenda, with teasers and posters for the new batch of episodes highlighting the 'Rise of the Villains'.

Though Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) will continue his ascent to the criminal underworld's throne, a new big bad is to be introduced following the departure of Jada Pinkett Smith's original character Fish Mooney.

For a while fans have known that both Clayface and Mad Hatter would be coming to the show, and recently it was announced that Jessica Lucas would step into the role of villainess Tigress, but now Gotham is adding to their female roster with the traditionally male Firefly becoming female in their universe.

According to a report exclusive to TVLine, newcomer Michelle Veintimilla will play the pyromaniac Bridgit Pike in a two-episode arc airing before the end of the year.

Released by FOX, the character description for Bridgit reads: "Enslaved by her brothers, a notorious gang of arsonists, Bridgit Pike is forced into the family business. When she catches the eye of Selina Kyle, the young Cat Woman and the soon-to-be-Firefly team up to put Bridgit's firestarting skills to good use. But after a deadly encounter with the Pike Brothers, the meek Cinderella is transformed into a vengeful supervillain, hell bent on destroying those who have wronged her."

The CW's superhero series Arrow featured the villain itself in its first season with the Garfield Lynns version - a former firefighter who was thought to have died on duty. Obsessed with revenge and targeting old members of his team, Gotham could be changing the character's gender to entirely separate its own incarnation from Arrow's.

Gotham will return for its second season in the US from September 21 at 8pm on FOX.
