Game of Thrones writer and producer Bryan Cogman has spoken out to "clarify" recent comments he made in regards to the show's latest twist, which saw Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) raped at the hands of the sadistic Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) - something that didn't happen in the original George R R Martin novels.

Speaking in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cogman responded to the heartbreaking scene and said: "This isn't a timid little girl walking into a wedding night with Joffrey. This is a hardened woman making a choice and she sees this as the way to get back her homeland."

Later he took to his Twitter account to make sure fans knew that this original statement wasn't his attempt to blame the victim, and instead said that the choice he was referring to was Sansa's to marry Ramsay.

He continued: "She feels marrying him is a vital step in reclaiming her homeland. Not trying to change anyone's opinion of the scene (negative or otherwise) but that is what I was referring to. Again, that's my last comment on the scene."

Meanwhile, both George R R Martin and Sophie Turner have spoken about the scene, with the author defending the writing team's need to deviate from the source material and the actress claiming she "loved" filming the scene.

Game of Thrones continues on Sunday nights at 9/8c on HBO, simulcast in the UK at 2am on Sky Atlantic. The same episode is repeated in the UK at 9pm on Monday nights.
