Though it had previously been marked as a show set for seven seasons, it looks like Game of Thrones will now consist of at least eight, with producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss "feeling" around two more years after season six.

Speaking this week to the TCA, HBO's president of programming Mike Lombardo said of the show: "Seven seasons and out was never the case. The question is how much beyond (seven seasons) it will go. David and Dan are feeling there are two more years after Season 6, that's what we're looking at right now. We hope that they would change their mind, but for now that's how they are feeling."

This is the first fans will have heard about the creative duo behind the show considering eight seasons instead of seven, and with some lingering threads from the books still yet to make their way onto the screen, it could be a great decision.

Lombardo also said that HBO "would be open to anything (Benioff and Weiss) want to do, there is enormous amount of storytelling in that world", implying that sequels, prequels and more could all be possible in the future following the show.

Game of Thrones will return for its sixth season in spring 2016.
