Game of Thrones is without a doubt one of the most popular shows of the modern day. Based on George R R Martin’s novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, it tells the story of a group of different rulers all vying for total control over Westeros and the Seven Kingdoms. With showrunners gearing up to wrap the series with an upcoming seventh and eighth season, it’s now been revealed that the show’s final season could actually not premiere until 2019.

Speaking to EW, HBO President, Casey Bloys explained the shocking news, whilst adding: “I hesitate to call them ‘movies’, that sounds a bit grand. But one of the hallmarks of the show has been how cinematic it is. The show has proven that TV is every bit as impressive, and in many cases more so, than film. What they’re doing is monumental. When you see these battles in season seven, and what I imagine season eight will be, it’s a big, big show. We’ve done a lot of great shows, but this one combines the complex characters we love with a huge cinematic scope. I think this is the first show to prove that can be done – and we’re the first people to pay for it.”

He also said: “By the time the final season airs, Dan [Weiss] and David [Benioff] will have been at this for 12 years. Which is an amazing fact.”

It’s a sad thing to know that fans could have to wait over a year before they see the final six episodes of the series. If it means we get the highest quality achievable however, it’s a delay we should all be willing to endure.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK in July.
