With the news last week from author George R. R. Martin that he won't have finished or released his latest novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series before the release of the sixth season of Game of Thrones, fans have now been given an official date in which they'll be able to whet their appetites with the fantasy drama series.

HBO revealed in a press release at the TCAs and later via Twitter, that Game of Thrones will make its return to the network in the US on Sunday, April 24, with Veep and Silicon Valley also returning the same night.

This is the latest in the year a season of the show has ever premiered, and with the standard 10 episodes we expect, it will likely wrap up in late June.

Cast additions for the new season have been revealed, with Richard E. Grant, Essie Davis and Ian McShane all signing up in roles not yet detailed.

James Faulkner and Freddie Stroma join the cast as the father and brother of Samwell Tarly respectively, and Three-Eyed Raven has seen a recast through Max von Sydow.

Pilou Asbæk, who recently told Digital Spy that working on the series was a "dream come true", steps into the role of Euron Greyjoy - uncle of Theon-turned-Reek.

One of the big questions that has been plaguing viewers since season 5 wrapped is whether or not Jon Snow has died. Stabbed multiple times at the hands of the Night's Watch, he was left in the snow bleeding out, and those close to the show confirmed he really was gone.

With actor Kit Harington spotted on set though, and his face being used on promotional material for the new season, it's pretty much a dead cert that he'll be back in some capacity.

This season also sees the return of Bran Stark, with the character completely omitted from season 5. In a new picture released by Entertainment Weekly, actor Isaac Hempstead Wright has noticeably aged, so it will be interesting to see whether or not the show tries to explain this or just allows it to pass by.

Game of Thrones returns on April 24 to HBO in the US, and will likely premiere in the UK a day after on April 25 on Sky Atlantic.
