George R.R. Martin has admitted that though he once worried about the Game of Thrones television series ending before the conclusion of the books the show is based on, he's now accepted that that's exactly what is going to happen.

GeekWire reports the author said at a science-fiction convention in Spokane, Washington: "There was a period where I was worried about that. Then I said, to hell with that. Worrying about it isn't going to change it one way or another. I still sit down at the typewriter, and I have to write the next scene and the next sentence... I'm just going to tell my story, and they're telling their story and adapting my books, and we shall see."

Currently there are only five of the planned seven novels published, with Martin working on the sixth in the series for many years now. Martin has even been less involved with the TV series so that he can make more progress on the new book.

Asked if book six will be ready before Game of Thrones returns next spring, Martin responded: "Don't ask me when the book is going to be done - I'll ask my minions to lop your head off."

With the television series making quite a few changes now to the story Martin has created, it's not difficult to imagine that when the show is said and done, the books will be going in a different direction entirely.

Game of Thrones season 6 premieres on HBO and Sky Atlantic in spring 2016.
