Gotham's second season is right around the corner, and with its 'Rise of the Villains' theme comes another big announcement - that James Frain's new character will be introducing a "very famous DC villain" into the mix.

FOX's official synopsis for the new season reads: "The stakes are higher than ever as Gotham explores the origin stories of some of the most ambitious and depraved Super Villains, including The Riddler, The Joker and Mr. Freeze, and Bruce Wayne uncovers more secrets from his father's past."

Executive producer on the show Danny Cannon spoke to TV Guide this week, who talked about Frain's character as one who will introduce the "origins of a very famous DC villain."

Cannon said: "Theo Galavan arrives in Gotham as a prodigal son returning. He comes from a very wealthy family with ancient roots in the building and foundation of Gotham. It takes a while for us to understand why he came back to Gotham and what his plan is, but it's an insidious one, obviously. He's a little bit like the Great Gatsby and Dracula coming to town with money and influence and charm and trying to bend Gotham to serve him."

It's not just Theo of the Galavan family who'll arrive in the new season, with his crazed sister Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas), AKA Tigress being added to the mix. As a famous DC character since the 1930s, Tigress is a character who in the comic books world has been taken up by three different people - none of whom were Tabitha Galavan.

With a lot of exploration of the brother/sister duo to come, the new episodes should be incredibly exciting for any fan of the franchise.

Gotham's second season comes to the US on FOX on September 21.
