According to brand new reports from Deadline, a drama-comedy TV series based on the life of the world’s most famous drag queen, RuPaul is being made by none other than JJ Abrams. Having worked on such projects as Star Wars in the past, the collaboration is clearly a big deal.

Deadline says the series will “fictionalise” RuPaul’s rise from a club kid to global LGBTQ icon, set in 1980s New York, and promising to bring all the grit, glitter and glamour to the small screen that Ru has experienced in his time.

Orange is the New Black writer Gary Lennon has joined the series as writer, with World of Wonder and Abrams’ Bad Robot production company producing.

The news comes ahead of the ninth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, which will hit screens in the US this Friday, March 24 on VH1. Lady Gaga will be featuring in the first episode as a guest judge as viewers are introduced to a brand new selection of drag queens, vying it out for the winner’s spot.

Ru said of the series: “Thank you Logo for continuing to provide a powerful platform for these brave, gorgeous and creative souls to tell their stories. They represent the hopes and dreams of all the outsiders around the world.”

He also said the new series is “bigger, better and more twisted than ever”; quite the feat having seen all of the episodes that have made up the eight seasons to-date.
