John Travolta

John Travolta is to return to television acting for a major role in new series American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson.

The actor shot to fame between 1975 and 1979 in ABC sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, and he's now to portray American footballer-turned-murder suspect's defence attorney Robert Shapiro in Ryan Murphy's 10-part mini-series.

Cuba Gooding Jr. is to portray the main character, O.J. Simpson.

David Schwimmer's going to play Robert Kardashian - who worked on O.J.'s defence team throughout the 1995 trial and is also the late father of Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and Rob Kardashian.

The FX miniseries is based on the works by Jeffrey Toobin of best-selling book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson, and is to be told from the lawyer's point of view.

Several different aspects of why the jury came to its conclusion will be explored, and Sarah Paulson is to reunite with Murphy in her role as prosecutor Marcia Clark.

Murphy's to direct at least the pilot episode and will work alongside executive producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson.

Production starts later this year in Los Angeles.
