Internationally renowned actress Kate Beckinsale will take her next major role in ITV and Amazon Prime Video drama, The Widow it’s been revealed, with the original limited series drama set to come to viewers from BAFTA-nominated screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams (The Missing, Liar).
Beckinsale will take on the role of Georgia Wells in the series, who has her life completely flipped upside down when she gets a phonecall in the middle of the night, telling her that her husband of over a decade has been reported dead following a plane crash in the Congolese jungle.
Jumping ahead three years, the show will follow Georgia’s life in its latest stage where her past is now a part of history and she’s finally moved on. When she makes a shocking discovery however, the trauma of losing her husband begins to return and she finds herself travelling to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, doing her all to unearth the truth surrounding her husband’s disappearance.
Head of Drama at ITV, Polly Hill said of Beckinsale’s casting: “She is perfect for the role of Georgia in what is, as always, brilliant, compelling and surprising storytelling from Harry and Jack Williams. We’re very pleased to have secured the series which is an ITV original commission and co-production with Amazon Prime.”
Harry and Jack Williams added: “Kate Beckinsale is a brilliantly talented actress and we’re thrilled she’s joining us on this journey – we couldn’t imagine anyone more perfect for the role. The Widow is our most ambitious and cinematic piece to-date and we can’t wait to bring the dark heart of the Congolese jungle to the screen.”
The Widow is set to go into production later this month in South Africa, Wales and Rotterdam, with Sam Donovan serving as lead director on the series. Eliza Mellor serves as producer on the show, with Jack and Harry Williams as executive producers.
No air-date has yet been given, but when The Widow does premiere, it’ll be on ITV in the UK and on Amazon Prime Video in the US.
