Speaking to Now magazine she said: "She has amazing storylines, like the adoption one that continues this series. Her outfits are more glamorous and risqué now. You can see calf!"

The actress also spoke about her relationship with on-screen sister Lady Mary Crawley (Michelle Dockery), hinting that their differences could be put aside because of certain revelations and exposed secrets.

"Still a little catty. Mary obviously doesn't know Edith has gone through this whole pregnancy, so she thinks the reason she's sad is because Michael Gregson (Charles Edwards), her lover, went missing. She's like, 'My husband's dead. Get over it.'"

Downton Abbey continues Sunday on ITV.
