Idris Elba who plays Luther

Luther is being remade for American television after a pilot episode was ordered by FOX.

The BBC One crime drama starred Idris Elba in the UK and was a huge hit with audiences, and now FOX announced it'll be re-worked for a US audience by the same creator as the original British series - Neil Cross.

A new actor is to take on the role of Chief Inspector John Luther, but Idris is still involved in the project, acting on-set as an executive producer.

FOX described their interpretation of the cop show in a statement, saying it's about a: "near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind can't always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions".

As well as this series, FOX announced pilot episodes for new shows Rosewood, 48 Hours 'Til Monday and Frankenstein.

The latter is based on the ideas in Mary Shelley's gothic horror story about a man being brought to life by scientists, but it'll be reinvented in a modern setting.

It'll focus on Ray Pritchard, a retired and morally bankrupt police officer who's brought back from the dead, younger and stronger.

Written by Crisis creator Rand Ravich and Howard Gordon - previously working on Buffy The Vampire Slayer and the X-Files - it's been described as a "grounded" sci-fi series.
