Martin Clunes is to take on the role of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a new three-part ITV drama series from Buffalo Pictures.

The series is an adaptation of Julian Barnes's novel Arthur & George, which itself was based on genuine and intriguing events in the life of the famous novelist and physician.

Arthur recaptures his love for life when he challenges and pursues a notorious miscarraige of justice - the case of hard-working solicitor and son of Hampshire vicar Reverend Shapurji Edalji and his wife Charlotte - George Edalji.

He's spent seven years in Pentonville Prison for allegedly sending threatening letters as well as mutilating animals, and the offences have now become known as The Great Wyrley Rippings.

Calling himself a "bore and a sulk" following the death of his wife Louisa, all around Arthur do their best to lift him from his grief including his 'Mam', who hopes he can find something to "sink his teeth into".

The show will be set in Staffordshire, Hampshire and London back in 1903, with Conan Doyle's family home as the backdrop.

Ed Whitmore (Silent Witness, He Kills Coppers) has written the drama and it is set to go into production in autumn of this year, filming in Greater London and Staffordshire.

Further casting news is expected later this year.
