The popular presenting duo - who are best known for their work on 'The Great British Bake Off' - were recently dealt a blow when it was announced that their revival of the iconic game show has been reduced to two episodes by BBC bosses.

The corporation have reportedly only decided to screen two of the four episodes they've filmed because they fear it will flop.

A source told said recently: "The BBC had announced four programmes, but when they saw what had been taped could only realistically air two."

However, a spokesperson for the broadcaster insisted that it's not unusual for the length of a series to change during the production.

The spokesperson explained: "During the production process it's not unusual for a new series to change length as the format evolves, and we've got a brilliant show for audiences on BBC One this Spring."

The report came shortly after it was confirmed that Basil Brush is to make his TV comeback on the rebooted version of 'The Generation Game'.

The children's character - who appeared on 'The Chase' a few months ago - was scheduled to appear in all of the new episodes, which are to be aired later this year.

Looking forward to the Basil's appearance, puppeteer Michael Winsor said: "It's top secret at the moment. We are doing pop-ups to surprise Mel and Sue.

"We did one episode and he was such a success we ended up doing four."

The revival hasn't been popular with former host Jim Davidson.

The 64-year-old comedian - who presented the show from 1995 until 2002 - criticised Mel and Sue for their lack of "ad-lib" skills and is convinced they'll struggle to fill the shoes of the late Sir Bruce Forsyth, who hosted on-and-off between 1971 and 1994.

He said: "They're not right, they won't know how to ad-lib. They're not there to teach them how to bake a f***ing cake.

"I don't know these women, I've never heard of them but you need someone that's going to be able to ad-lib and drive the show along.

"That's why Bruce was so good. He drove it along his way. He was the energy. You can't remember any of the people on it, all you remember is Bruce."

Mel and Sue's 'Generation Game' starts at 8pm on BBC One.
