Joining the GCPD in the first season of Gotham, Detective Jim Gordon discovered it wasn't the easiest place to do good work, becoming overwhelmed with the amount of corruption running through the local law enforcement. Despite that he managed to change some things about the way things worked, but he did also slide into the manipulative and underhanded techniques when the time called for it.

According to showrunner Bruno Heller the show's second season is now going to mark the "rise of the villains", but just who will be working on the side of good this time round?

Michael Chiklis has joined the cast in a semi-regular role according to a TVLine report, stepping into the shoes of Captain Nathaniel Barnes.

His character description reads: "[Barnes] lands on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham's police force. He is a law and order zealot; unafraid of making enemies - on either side of the law. For Gordon, Barnes is a hero and a mentor, someone with whom he can share the burden of heroism. Captain Barnes proves himself to be a strong ally to Gordon... but one day he will make an equally powerful enemy."

Because of his rank and impact on the GCPD, questions have now been raised about the future Captain Essen has on the show, and just whether or not Chiklis is playing an original character or a classic DC villain in disguise.

Questions will be answered and more posed when Gotham returns in America to FOX at 8pm on September 21.
