The 59-year-old actress played the iconic character - Ian Beale's ex-wife - between 1988 and 1998, and Michelle has voiced her displeasure at her exit on social media.

Michelle made the comments after one Twitter use admitted to being "gutted" about Cindy's departure from the soap.

The fan wrote: "Just watched Cindy's exit with Steven and Peter. I am so gutted that she has now gone. I know she comes back into it for a few episodes when Ian tracks her down. But still... Big mistake EastEnders... BIG MISTAKE, HUGE!!! #Eastenders #classiceastenders @missmcollins (sic)"

Another 'EastEnders' fan tweeted: "Wasn’t it @missmcollins choice cos she was pregnant? (sic)"

A different fan responded with an embarrassed emoji, adding: "Yes but they killed her off."

Michelle then took to the micro-blogging platform to air her unhappiness at her exit.

The actress' character died off-screen while in prison, and Michelle has now revealed she thinks it was a "silly" decision by the show's bosses.

She tweeted: "Yes they do it a lot to major characters, kind of silly! Producers come in and want to make their mark!"

Fans have previously suggested that Cindy's story could be revived one day, as she passed away off screen.

But Michelle doesn't think it's possible that she'll ever return to the soap.

The actress said: "She is dead. I've always dismissed it because she's been dead so in a way they sort of did me a favour because I can never really go back. But in a way I think I'd spoil it if I go back."
