Michelle Dockery has said she'd love to get Maggie Gyllenhaal in future episodes of Downton Abbey.

The actress plays Lady Mary Crawley in the period drama, and has admitted she's a huge fan of Gyllenhaal.

She said to BANG Showbiz: "I read somewhere that Maggie Gyllenhaal loves the show so I think that would be great if she fancied popping in and doing a cameo."

Admitting she loves big star appearances on the show, such as Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti, she insisted it's important that a balance of acting talent is present.

She added: "Our casting director is actually really amazing at getting people in who are not really well known. It's a sort of a balance really.

"We've had Paul Giamatti and we've had Shirley MacLaine but it's finding the right people.

"There are lots of people who have said they'd love to do it so it's really flattering to hear that."

Gyllenhaal herself recently admitted she'd love to be in the show.

She said: "I've seen every episode of 'Downton Abbey'. It's like crack. We love English people doing old-fashioned things.

"I would be the American sister who is pregnant by - ooh, I don't know - the sexy guy who had a fling with Lady Rose."
