Miranda Hart is the favourite female actress to become the next 'Doctor Who'.
The comedienne is British women's first choice to replace Matt Smith as the next Time Lord in the BBC One show, according to a new survey by online beauty retailer Escentual.com.
The bumbling character actress scooped over 18 per cent of the votes, narrowly beating former Doctor's companion Billie Piper with 17 per cent.
Billie played fan-favourite Rose Tyler, who exited the show in 2009, but could plausibly be written back into the series since she is set to make a return in the 50th anniversary special episode in November.
'Peep Show' actress Olivia Coleman was third choice with 15.9 per cent, while Sheridan Smith ranked fourth with 14.5 per cent, and 'Great British Bake-Off' presenter Sue Perkins - who has already been the subject of an fan campaign to make her the next Time Lord - was fifth with 5.7 per cent.
Miranda - who is the star of her own slapstick sitcom 'Miranda' - is a fan of the sci-fi show but hasn't definitely thrown her hat into the ring for the iconic part.
Speaking to HeatWorld.com, she said: "I think Matt is just amazing, I loved David Tennant. I didn't watch it when I was younger, it scared me. I can't even watch a horror film.
"I started watching some of 'Doctor Who' recently on my own and I got too scared - I had to watch it in the daytime, I'm pathetic! It might be alright if I'm in it and I don't have to watch it!"
Speculation has been rife regarding who the Twelfth Doctor could be after Matt announced at the weekend the Eleventh Doctor's time in the TARDIS would end in this year's Christmas special.
Showrunner Stephen Moffat has hinted he would be open to casting a woman in the role for the first time and in previous series plot devices have been written in to allow the character to change sex.
Miranda wouldn't be a completely implausible choice since comedienne Catherine Tate was previously cast to add some comic relief to the long-running programme in 2008.
