The primetime show has proved a ratings hit having recently returned for a new series but host Chris is expected to hand presenting duties over to the DJ for the next set of episodes in 2016.

An insider said: "Nick was always top of the list as potential host if Chris wasn't keen to commit. Now that looks as if it is becoming a reality."

The 49-year-old broadcaster already hosts the breakfast show on BBC Radio 2 and will be the new host of 'Top Gear' next year meaning he doesn't think he'll be able to manage another series of the wacky Channel 4 show.

The insider told the Sunday Mirror newspaper: "Nick is up for it and the expectation is Chris won't be able to squeeze another series into his packed schedule.

"Nick is perfect. He is enthusiastic, has great friendships with stars who would make fantastic guests - and appeals to younger viewers."

However, the 31-year-old star - who has been a regular visitor to the studios during the show's current series - may also struggle with the responsibility, already hosting the daily breakfast show on BBC Radio 1 and appearing as a judge on 'The X Factor'.

But TV bosses are set to secure the quiffed funnyman for the coveted job, especially as Chris previously said he was keen for Nick to be his successor.

Earlier this year, he revealed: "Nick is the future of 'TFI Friday'. I think if the show comes back, he is The One."
