The 49-year-old star - who is a judge alongside Mary on the BBC One baking contest - claims there would be no competition if they were to go up against one another in a test of their skills in the kitchen.

He said: "I'd win hands down without a shadow of a doubt!"

The expert bread-maker suggested they could pair up with the show's hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc for the ultimate Bake Off.

He added: "Maybe we'll do something with Sue Perkins and I working on a team and Mary and Mel Giedroyc working on a team ... I'd take up the challenge."

However, Mary, 79, is concerned her colleague wouldn't take it too well if she were to beat him and joked she'd sabotage her own victory to keep him happy.

She told The Sun newspaper: "I don't know what he'd do to me if he didn't win! I'd let him win."

Meanwhile, the pair are currently working on the Comic Relief special which features celebrities including 'Absolutely Fabulous' stars Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders, Jonathan Ross and Abbey Clancy.

And the judges insist they are just as harsh with their criticism of celebrities as they are of the ordinary contestants.

Paul explained: "We both say it as it is... whether they like it or not. I don't really care. It's very funny."
