The 57-year-old actor - who plays the titular Time Lord - was working with the Oscar winner and was told by the sci-fi show's producer to approach the Hollywood mega-star about appearing in an episode.

In an interview on 'Good Morning Britain', he said: "I think 'Doctor Who' is a great venue for any kind of actor, funnily enough they were trying to persuade me to ... I was working with Tom Hanks the other night and the producer was on to me saying, 'Try and persuade Tom to come and be in the show.' "

Although Capaldi asked the question Hanks, unfortunately, rebuffed his offer as he has too many other work commitments.

The Scottish star added: "I did have a word with him but he is very busy at the moment."

Capaldi has some ideas of his own for guest stars and would love to shoot some scenes opposite one of his rock idols.

The actor - whose portrayal of the Twelfth Doctor has been seen playing the guitar this season - said: "I think it would be good to have some rock stars, I'd like to see Keith Richards or David Bowie (come on)."

Capaldi, showrunner Steven Moffat, writer Mark Gatiss, Missy actress Michelle Gomez and Ingrid Oliver - who portrays fan favourite character Osgood - will all be attending the Doctor Who Festival at London's ExCel from today (13.11.15) through until Sunday (15.11.15).

'Doctor Who' fans will be able to say goodbye to Jenna Coleman before she leaves the show when she appears at the event on Saturday (14.11.15).
