Peter Capaldi has made 'Doctor Who' "spooky" again.

The 'In the Loop' star is the latest actor to take on the infamous role of the titular Time Lord in the BBC One sci-fi series and has said he wanted to make the Doctor "mysterious" and "spooky" - like the Doctor from his childhood.

Speaking on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, he said: "I always thought when I grew up, Doctor Who was a slightly spooky, weird character who would arrive out of no-where and take people off deep in to space and give them terrible, terrifying adventures."

The 56-year-old said he admired Matt Smith, David Tennant and Christopher Ecclestons' portrayals of the Doctor, but admitted that the character had become very "user friendly."

Peter said: "It's difficult with a show that is fifty years old, but I thought I'd try and get some mystery back in to it."

The show, which returns to BBC One on Saturday (23.08.14), has seen twelve variations of the character, but Peter has admitted his version of the Doctor is darker than before.

He said: "Some people might think he's a bit distant, a bit off or a bit hard. He's not user friendly, he doesn't care if you like him or not."

Peter's 'Doctor Who' debut airs on BBC One on Saturday (23.08.14) at 7.50pm.
