The 'Good Morning Britain' host has been left in agony after cracking the bones in an accident, but he has has not yet revealed the circumstances surrounding his tumultuous tumble.

Piers has been treated at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in Fulham, London, and he praised NHS staff for their assistance in his hour of need.

Revealing his injury on his Twitter account, he posted: "BREAKING (literally...) NEWS: I've broken 3 ribs falling flat on my a**e. Thanks to @ChelwestFT staff for speedy treatment. (sic)"

The injury could delay Piers' return to 'GMB' with co-host Susanna Reid after the regular presenters had the summer off from the ITV breakfast show.

The pair are due to resume duties on Monday September 4 following their lengthy break which began in July. In their absence Richard Madeley, Jeremy Kyle and Eamonn Holmes have been filling in for Piers over the last six weeks, with Ranvir Singh and Charlotte Hawkins stepping in for Susanna.

Piers, 52, has a history of rib injuries and previously broke one of his bones back in December 2013 when the keen cricket fan faced a barrage of six deliveries from Australian fast bowler Brett Lee for a TV segment on Sky Sports.
