The writer and director of the BBC One drama, Joe Ahearne, has no plans to give fans another instalment of the popular show despite getting rave reviews from Tuesday night's (14.03.17) finale, which saw Paula Reece (Vicky McClure) outed as a raving lunatic, who attempted to kill Ellen Rooney (Morven Christie) so she could pinch her man and mother her baby.

Ahearne says he has decided not to give the show another run because he likes leaving viewers "wanting more" and he doesn't think he could revive both Paula and Ellen.

He said: "I think it's quite good to leave people wanting more.

"And also, I think it would be quite difficult to get those two characters together without either amnesia or plastic surgery."

Despite being aware that fans of the programme want to see more episodes, Ahearne admits he wouldn't dedicate "20 hours" to watching a show like 'The Replacement'.

He told RadioTimes.com: "It's very much a self-contained drama. I am very much a fan of beginning, middle and end, and quite a lot of drama on telly both here and in American they want it to be all middle. They like it to go on forever.

"When I am a viewer I don't necessarily want to commit 20 hours of myself to something.

"So very few stories really repay that. It's the commercial imperative of TV, it's what everyone wants."

As the final show drew to a close, lead star Vicky took to Twitter to pay tribute to her co-star Morven and praise Ahearne's writing and direction.

Sharing a picture of the pair on Instagram, she wrote: "What a response! Thank you for all your messages. And I can't express my love for Morven enough! We had the best time making this! Made a friend for life. Joe Ahearne take a bow, your writing and direction was a joy to be a part of #the replacement (sic)"
