Samantha Morton has been cast in an upcoming BBC One adaptation of Laurie Lee's classic novel Cider With Rosie.

Speaking of the role she said: "I am thrilled to have taken on the role of Annie Lee in BBC One's 'Cider With Rosie' as it is one of my favourite books."

Phillippa Lowthorpe is to direct the drama which is being adapted by Ben Vanstone, and it's to air next year on the channel as part of a special classic 20th century literature season.

Starring alongside Samantha will be Jessica Hynes in the role of Miss Crabby, Absolutely Fabulous' June Whitfield as Granny Wallon and Annette Crosbie as Granny Trill.

Glue's Billy Howle will also star as Private James Harris.

Newcomers joining the cast are Archie Cox as series protagonist Laurie and Ruby Ashbourne Serkis as titular character Rosie. Emma Curtis takes on Marj.

Set in the Cotswolds during and immediately after the First World War, the story follows young Lol as he comes of age and goes through his first love, loss and family upheavel.

Lucy Richer, Commissioning Editor of BBC Drama Commissioning explained: "'Cider With Rosie' is one of the gems of twentieth century literature, and has been loved by generations as a coming of age story about love and family that still rings true today, in Laurie Lee's centenary year.

"We are delighted to be bringing it to BBC One with a fantastic young cast alongside the wonderful Samantha Morton."
