Whilst we already know Sherlock is going to be dark when it makes a return, thanks to the trailer that has already been released, one particular star of the show has confirmed just how bad things may get.

Speaking at a BAFTA celebration earlier this week, actor Amanda Abbington (who plays Mary Morstan in the show) said that the upcoming episodes are "brutal", with creator Steve Moffatt agreeing that charaters will be taken to a "darker place" than ever before.

Co-creator and Mycroft Holmes actor Mark Gatiss however reassured fans who may be stunned at the comments, saying: "We always have to keep reiterating this hasn't suddenly become some kind of uber bleak sort of Scandi show."

To this, Abbington agreed, adding: "It's quite funny. Actually, it's really funny.

"We as a company got the scripts, and we all got together and said 'this is brutal'. It's amazing. I think we all decided that this is our favourite series. Definitely, out of all we've done."

Sherlock returns to BBC One at 8.30pm on January 1 with 'The Six Thatchers'.
