Dimension Television which has recently turned the Scream movies on their head and brought out a first season television series with a second in production, has announced their plans to develop 1980 novella The Mist into a new series, drawing inspiration from King's work as well as Frank Darabont's 2007 movie.

The show hopes to tell an original story about a mist descending on a small town which leads to chaos and terror amongst the residents who live there. King is said to have granted permission for the project to go ahead, with writer Christian Torpe onboard.

Weinstein Company and Dimension Films head Bob Weinstein said in a statement: "The terror and drama in Stephen King's novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth. With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares."

With the right writing and creativity behind the show, it could become one of the most inventive to hit screens - no date on when it's scheduled to broadcast have yet been announced, as the project is still in its early stages.
