The 41-year-old presenter's 'In For A Penny' segment - in which unsuspecting members of the public are given the chance to win £1,000 for a stake of just 1p - has been commissioned by ITV bosses as its own standalone programme.

A spokesperson for the network confirmed: "'In For A Penny' has been commissioned for a series on ITV, hosted by Stephen Mulhern."

The segment on 'Saturday Night Takeaway' - which is pre-recorded - sees people approached by the presenter and asked to take part, so long as they have a penny.

They take part in four rounds of different challenges, which have included things like guessing Stephen's age or a TV show that he hosts, and the final focuses on stopping at a selected short time duration. If the contestant completes all five rounds, they win the money, otherwise the game ends.

The segment was introduced last year, and Stephen previously revealed there were plans in place for it to get its own series, though he suggested there could be some changes.

He previously said: "Ant & Dec asked me to do it, which is really exciting. I just knew it was a winner. It's gone down well. We're hoping to get it off the ground later this year.

"We just need some time to work on it. Ideally, we'd make the cash prizes bigger too, just to up the ante."

The 'Catchphrase' host was also keen to bring back the "golden days" of TV.

He added: "I love working with members of the public and I think you can have a lot of fun with them."
