With the first season of The Flash ending on such a cliffhanger, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) risked it all to save Central City being swallowed up by a black hole. Though those events have not yet concluded on-screen, the second season will be opening up half a year after the events we last saw, with the premiere episode seeing Barry face off against a new metahuman - Atom Smasher.

Now with the new batch of episodes right around the corner, network The CW is revealing casting updates to hype what's to come. Opening up the DC multiverse, there will be opportunities to introduce alternate realities, new allies, new villains and more for the team at S.T.A.R. Labs.

TV Line is now reporting that newcomer Violett Beane has joined the show as speedster Jesse Quick, marking her first television role following on from her work on two upcoming movies Flay and Slash. Violett is to appear in multiple episodes caught between Flash and this season's overarching villain, Zoom. Described as "brilliant, but quirky", Jesse will attend college in Central City and looks likely to slip straight into the team.

Additionally a brand new villain for the series has been cast, with ComicBook.com confirming that Hemlock Grove's Demore Barnes will step into the mantle of Henry Hewitt, better known as Firestorm villain Tokamak, described as "a charming, but cocky scientist who was affected by the same Particle Accelerator explosion that created the Flash. When Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) recruits him to join the team at S.T.A.R. Labs, Hewitt jumps at the opportunity to fulfill his destiny as a powerful metahuman."

Relatively minor in the comic book world, Henry Hewitt is the CEO of Hewitt Corporation and a high ranking member of criminal organisation the 2000, dedicated to taking over the world by the year 2000. Attempting to recreate the accident which made Firestorm, Hewitt gains powers of manipulating energy.

The Flash's second season begins Tuesday, October 6 at 8pm on The CW, with Arrow season four starting the day after on Wednesday, October 7 at 8pm on The CW.
