In perhaps the least surprising news of the year so far, The Walking Dead has been renewed for an eighth season by AMC, who made the announcement as part of their 'The Walking Dead: The Journey So Far' recap TV special.

President of AMC, Charlie Collier said: "Eeny, meeny, miny, more. What a joy to partner with Robert Kirkman, Scott M. Gimple and some of the hardest-working people in television to bring The Walking Dead to the fans. And, most important, thanks to those fans for breathing life into this remarkable series right along with us."

With such incredibly strong ratings, it comes as no shock that the series will be making a return in the last months of 2017, and the AMC CEO was recently quoted as saying he could see the series continuing for many years to come in the future.

The renewal also includes 16 new episodes of Talking Dead - the live after-show hosted by Chris Hardwick which breaks down the episode that aired before it with some of the cast members and most famous super-fans.

When The Walking Dead returns in 2017, it will kick off with the 100th episode of the series.

The Walking Dead returns with its season 7 premiere on AMC in the US this Sunday, October 23, following in the UK on Monday, October 24 on FOX.
