Let’s face it; The Walking Dead is one of the most miserable shows on television. The characters we’ve all grown to know and love don’t have much to be happy about as they go about their days doing their best to survive a momentous zombie apocalypse, and with villains and tyrants seemingly around every corner, it’s harder than ever before for anybody to truly enjoy a ‘life worth living’.

This was no more apparent than in the first half of the show’s seventh season, in which a number of key characters were killed off and a new regime was put in place for Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his group of survivors. New Big Bad villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) let his dominance reign supreme, and the rest is history. The group may have faced some challenges in the past, but none more so than what they’re up against right now. That however could all be about to change.

Speaking to EW, showrunner Scott M. Gimple explained of the season seven midseason premiere: “It propels us into a very different half season from the one before it. Before the end of that very first episode back, you will see Rick Grimes smile.”

He added: “The midseason premiere is a movie unto itself. Angela Kang wrote it, Greg Nicotero directed it, the cast knocked it out of the park – pretty much literally, you’ll see – and the crew pulled it all together, and it was a hell of a lot to pull together.”

Gimple’s comments suggest that those who were put off by the first half of season seven due to the huge level of violence and misery may have something to be excited for when the series makes its return. We wouldn’t get too excited however – this is Negan’s world, at least for now…

The Walking Dead returns to AMC in the US on February 12, and to FOX in the UK on February 13.
