With season two of The Flash right around the corner, Zoom was announced as one of the big villains during the Warner Bros. television panel at this year's San Diego Comic Con, bringing a season one highlight reel of The Flash to a massive close.

Since that point however, little to no information about the speedster and his involvement in the new season has been revealed, with the identity, origins and casting all left a mystery and producers keeping it that way.

This week though, Variety reports that The Flash have talked Tony Todd into voicing Zoom - a horror movie icon best known for his role as The Candyman.

Talking about the hiring of Todd, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg explained: "Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader - this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd."

He also spoke about Zoom's look: "The Zoom outfit is much more organic than the Reverse-Flash suit. In a way, it's hard to tell if it is a suit or alive… There's no skin showing, for all you know there's a robot underneath or dark energy."

As an already established character in DC Comics, fans will assume that the man behind the mask is Hunter Zolomon, but Kreisberg has warned against viewers thinking absolutely everything is restricted to comic book lore.

""… I think we've shown up until this point a great deal of respect and reverence for the source material, so that we always feel like we're fulfilling the comic book fans' expectations while also not spoon-feeding them stuff directly from the comics… hopefully comic book fans will be happy because we've come up with a clever way to spin the tale."

Meanwhile, Iris West's (Candice Patton) role on the show is about to get a whole lot more exciting, with EW reporting she'll take on the leadership role at S.T.A.R. Labs following the death of Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne (Tom Cavanaugh).

Kreisberg explains: "Iris slides into [the role] very naturally. She's a born leader. One of the best things in the premiere is Barry decides that he wants to work alone because he doesn't want to risk anyone else's lives, and Iris is really the one who gets the band back together again. She's the only one who can stand up to Barry."

With all this and more to look forward to, this new season looks to be just as exciting a ride as the first - and we can't wait to see it.

The Flash returns to screens in the US on Tuesday, October 6 at 8pm on The CW.
