Brendan O'Carroll refused the opportunity to join Strictly Come Dancing as Mrs. Brown.

The comedian claims the BBC approached him to have his alter-ego Agnes appear on the contest as part of their Christmas special.

Speaking on BBC One's Sunday Morning Live, he said: "The idea had been mooted it would be nice in the Christmas special that just once dance with Len [Goodman] and Mrs. Brown would be nice.

"It's nice to have a hybrid and a crossover between Mrs. Brown and something else but the truth of it is 'Strictly Come Dancing' doesn't need me or Mrs. Brown.

"It's a great entity in its own right. I have to protect [Mrs. Brown] from Len."

He is now looking forward to seeing his wife Jennifer Gibney take part however, partnered with professional Tristan MacManus.

"I am so, so proud. Pride in your family or pride in your partner or someone else gives you more confidence."

He added: "I am not a great dancer and not an enthusiast of dancing. I would help in any way I can and the only way I can really help is to let her know that she has all the talent and all the ability necessary to do this and all she had to is put her arms out and fly."
