The 'Only Love Can Hurt Like This' hitmaker checked in with the music mogul before she agreed to join the BBC One show as a judge as she didn't want it to affect her recording contract with Sony.

She explained: "I don't want to shoot myself in the foot, I am not stupid. I wanted to know that whatever I did wasn't going to alienate anything for me. I don't want to become anyone's worst enemy. I had to call around and be like, 'Is this gonna p*** you off?' I don't want to end up on the bottom of someone's priorities.

"Simon Cowell is an extremely powerful man and indirectly he is very, very high up in the music company I am with, Sony. So I don't want to be signed and shelved."

However, the 56-year-old television personality had nothing but positive comments for the 34-year-old singer.

She added to The Sun newspaper: "Simon just said, 'I think it will be really good and you should go for it if you want to.' He settled my worries. He said, 'You are not going to be suddenly dropped by Sony, don't worry.'"
