Channel 4 kicked off its documentary series Royal Marines Commando School last night, and whilst I was expecting a lot of shouting, not too much emotion and drama blown out of proportion because of the cameras in every corner, the show actually had a lot of surprises.

We were introduced to some of the faces we'd be following throughout the series, and one of them showed how brave they were straight away when he admitted this wasn't the life he wanted to live, and he was going down this path simply because it's what his parents wanted. He held his ground and went home to pursue a medical degree, but was promised by one of the superiors that he'd return one day, because everybody who leaves comes back. Everybody else locked themselves in for the full 28 day experience.

French-born marine Corporal 'Froggy' Chaffour was the man in charge of the troupe, demanding that everything be taken seriously but almost cracking a smile at times when the new kids on the block were finding their bearings.

There was a brilliant scene where the recruits were being shown how to ask for permission to speak outside the Corporal's office, and as they stumbled over their words and one even muttered 'Y'alright Corporal' before attempting his introduction, it was laugh out loud footage and a lot lighter than I'd first have thought.

That's not to say they didn't put in some hard work and determination, despite Froggy stating they were the worst group he's ever had to deal with following an unsuccessful inspection where every member failed, and their weekend privileges were stripped away.

It was emotional to see one of the older members of the group have to leave on medical grounds, especially as he had no other plans for life. This was his dream, but it was one that was now shattered. He'd never be allowed back again, proving just how tough and exclusive this 'club' really is.

Across the next eight weeks I'll be tuning in for every episode. I didn't expect to get as attached to these people so quickly as I did, but I'm glad it happened.

Royal Marines Commando School continues Mondays, 9pm on Channel 4.
